Integers for Class 6 – Notes, Rules, and Practice Questions

Maths | Class 6 | Topic: Integers

1. What are Integers?

Integers are whole numbers that can be positive, negative, or zero. They do not include fractions or decimals.

Examples: -7, -3, 0, 4, 15

2. Types of Integers

  • Positive Integers: More than zero (1, 2, 3, ...)
  • Negative Integers: Less than zero (-1, -2, -3, ...)
  • Zero: Neither positive nor negative

3. Rules of Integers

A. Addition Rules

Expression Explanation Result
(+) + (+) Add the numbers; result is positive 3 + 5 = 8
(-) + (-) Add the absolute values; result is negative -3 + (-5) = -8
(+) + (-) or (-) + (+) Subtract smaller from larger; take sign of larger 7 + (-4) = 3, -7 + 4 = -3

B. Subtraction

Subtraction is adding the opposite. Example:

5 − (-3) = 5 + 3 = 8

C. Multiplication Rules

Signs Result Sign Example
(+) × (+) Positive 4 × 3 = 12
(-) × (-) Positive -4 × -3 = 12
(+) × (-) or (-) × (+) Negative 4 × -3 = -12

D. Division Rules

The same sign rules as multiplication apply.

Signs Result Sign Example
(+) ÷ (+) Positive 12 ÷ 3 = 4
(-) ÷ (-) Positive -12 ÷ -3 = 4
(+) ÷ (-) or (-) ÷ (+) Negative 12 ÷ -3 = -4

4. Number Line Representation

Integers are shown on a number line: positive to the right, negative to the left, and zero in the middle.

5. Properties of Integers

  • Closure: Sum, difference, and product of integers is an integer.
  • Commutative: a + b = b + a; a × b = b × a
  • Associative: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
  • Distributive: a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c
